Morris grew up in Mirror, AB, where he learned the core values of hard work and lending a helping hand. Years as a teacher, museum director, city councillor (three terms), operator of a small agricultural business and Mayor (three years) have demonstrated his abilities. Morris’ many local, provincial and national awards include:

  • 1997 Order of Canada for distinguished voluntary service & leadership
  • 2002 Queen’s Jubilee Medal for distinguished voluntary service & leadership.

Healthy and at his productive prime, Morris continues to lead.

Morris Flewwelling is a vigourous, energetic leader committed to our city’s future.  During his term as Mayor, the City resolved land conflicts with the County, added much needed industrial land, initiated changes to free up valuable riverfront land, addressed water access challenges, created a Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness, and much more.

The following highlights provide a glimpse of Morris Flewwelling’s life of accomplishment:

  • Born and raised in Mirror AB
  • Graduate of the University of Alberta with a major in biological sciences and a minor in history
  • 20 year career teaching in Alix AB and Red Deer AB
  • 18 year career in public administration
  • President of Bar VJ Management Consulting Ltd. which manages three small businesses and a small cow/calf operation
  • Red Deer resident for 40+ years
  • Recognized by the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce as 1982 Citizen of the Year as a community builder, recipient of an Alberta Achievement Award (1990) for community leadership and volunteer service, recipient of the Canada 125 Medal (1992) and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal (2003) for distinguished volunteer leadership and community service
  • Received the Order of Canada 1997, the highest Canadian civilian recognition for distinguished volunteer service and leadership of national significance in heritage preservation
  • Married to Hazel, father of two adult sons
  • Enjoys gardening, horses, skiing and history
