Innovating to meet new challenges:
Four priorities for the next three years
The Red Deer way of life
To protect and enhance our quality of life, Morris will lead:
- action to ensure streets that are safe, clean and fun places to be
- continued commitment to air quality issues, water conservation and sustainable waste management
- investment in natural areas and parks.
Responsible investment & financial management
In this era of rapid growth, we need to be vigilant about making smart investments and controlling costs. Morris will lead:
- attention to critical infrastructure needs
- responsible use of debt to spread infrastructure costs over time
- continued focus on reasonable property taxes and rates for services and facilities.
Environmental action
The time is now for cities to show leadership in addressing global environmental challenges; Red Deer has been innovative but clearly we can do more. Morris will lead:
- by giving careful consideration of alternatives to traditional growth and development practices
- partnerships with leading employers to demonstrate sustainable environmental leadership
- development of municipal environmental initiatives (eg. Water Conservation Strategy)
Finding solutions through citizen involvement & collaboration
As we grow, we need new ways to bring citizens’ perspectives, skills and knowledge into our project management and decision making processes. Morris will lead:
- innovative strategies for results-oriented citizen task groups.
- encouraging citizen involvement
As Mayor, Morris Flewwelling will continue to lead by inspiring diverse individuals and groups to pull together towards our common goal – building a better community.
