The Record

Morris Flewwelling has served Red Deer as an educator,
museum manager, City Councillor and active volunteer for
the past 40 years. When a community need has been identified
Morris has been the first to establish a committee to devise
a creative solution. The following record of achievement
presents a dynamic image of the man and his causes.
Accomplishments as Mayor
Morris Flewwelling is a vigourous, energetic leader committed to our city’s future.
Accomplishments during his successful first and second terms as Mayor include:
- the City resolved land conflicts with the County
- new Intermunicipal Development Plan
- added much needed industrial land west of Highway 2
- completed ‘Red Deer at 300,000’ – the vision / big picture
- initiated changes to free up valuable riverfront land
- moving City Yards as far-sighted investment in prime riverfront and to accommodate present / future needs for city services
- addressed water access challenges – successfully opposed Balzac application
- actively involved in water policy development
- created a Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness
- affordable housing strategy
- Housing First
- Regional Economic Development group formed to partner on growth
- proactive on health with a well-accepted smoking controls bylaw
- completed redevelopment of downtown Recreation Centre
- completed renovations in G.H. Dawe facilities for north Red Deer
- completed redevelopment of Golden Circle Seniors' Centre
- completed redevelopment of Museum and Art Gallery
- completed 67th Street RCMP precinct
- commenced building new RCMP headquarters
- completed the Sorensen Station parkade
- completed the Greater Downtown Action Plan
- initiated Veterans' Park development
- successfully managed ground ambulance transfer to AB Health Services
- initiated mayor's SAFE Downtown Task Force
